ENERGY MODELING FOR LEED

Fortier Engineering has experience performing energy modeling for LEED Energy and Atmosphere (EA) credit 1, for optimizing energy performance, for LEED EA prerequisite 2, and in preparing the templates for both of these LEED functions.

Fortier Engineering has performed energy modeling for LEED for the following types of buildings:

  • Schools, university buildings, industrial buildings (including exceptional calculations for process savings), office towers, supermarkets, retail, warehouse facilities, research laboratories

Fortier Engineering uses the following USGBC approved and DOE listed software for energy modeling:

Rochavera Tower B - project description

Tower B, in the Rochavera Corporate Tower in Sao Paulo Brazil, is an 18 story, 340,000 square foot office tower, and the LEED submission was in the category of new construction, or LEED NC. For more on the Rochavera Towers Complex, visit http://www.rochavera.com.br.

Tower B has been awarded the LEED Gold designation. SustentaX , consultants in sustainability engineering, was responsible for the LEED certification process management. Fortier Engineering participated in the process, performing the energy modeling for the Energy and Atmosphere prerequisite number two and the Energy and Atmosphere Credit number one. A key component of achieving the LEED Gold certification was the combined heat and power plant, which provides electricity to the Tower and provides steam to drive absorption chillers for cooling the Tower. Fortier Engineering used Carrier's HAP program for the basic simulation, and incorporated a custom "exceptional calculation" to submit with the templates in order to fully quantify the savings from the gas fired generators and absorption chillers.

BOMI Warehouse - project description

Fortier Engineering also worked with SustentaX on the LEED submission for the BOMI Warehouse, a 430,000 square foot warehouse of pharmaceutical products, a fully air conditioned building in the greater Sao Paulo area. Again, Fortier Engineering performed the building energy simulations and prepared the Energy Templates for this project. This project was awarded LEED Silver.

COMMISSIONING FOR LEED

Fortier Engineering has experience commissioning both for LEED EAp1 and EAc3, and for projects not seeking LEED certification.

Successful commissioning depends upon gaining a true understanding of the building owner’s requirements and objectives, and on continual and effective communication with the design team and the contracting team.

Fortier Engineering employs trend based commissioning as a cost effective enhancement to the final phase of project commissioning.

MEASUREMENT & VERIFICATION

Fortier Engineering has performed Measurement & Verification (M&V) on both large and small projects.

The Principal of Fortier Engineering, Dan Fortier, has performed and managed M&V activities since 1981, including M&V for Guaranteed Energy Savings Performance Contracts. Dan Fortier is certified by the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) as a Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP).

Fortier Engineering employs trend analysis as a key strategy on M&V projects where a Building Automation and Control System is installed. Trend analysis can verify that Energy Conservation Measures (ECM’s) are working, and can verify and quantify many values of significance in the M&V process.
